A couple of months ago, the good folks at Prana Power Yoga asked me to teach a new Sunday morning class they branded Prana Acoustic, which I think of as a power yoga class with a Sunday Brunch vibe. As a yoga teacher, this presents something of a challenge, since “yoga music” has become synonymous with either new age and electronica, which rarely are even remotely acoustic, or chanting, which is not usually my first choice of tunes on a Sunday morning. As a musician who loves all kinds of acoustic music, I thought this could be great fun. So I’ll periodically post playlists from this and other classes here. All of this music is available on Itunes unless otherwise noted, so do check it out. Here’s the first playlist.
Stream Karma, Tori- The Buddha Experience – Zen Lounge (Disc 2)
Flowing Ganga, Masood Ali Khan- The Yoga Sessions
Kind Folk, Kenny Wheeler- Angel Song
All My Days, Alexi Murdoch- Time Without Consequence
You’ve Got a Friend, Jacky Terrasson- Mirror
Poinciana, Keith Jarrett Trio- Whisper Not [Disc 2]
Waltz For Ruth, Pat Metheny/Charlie Haden- Beyond the Missouri Sky (Short Stories)
Circlesong Four, Bobby McFerrin- Circlesongs
Find Him, Cassandra Wilson- New Moon Daughter
Gaval Dance, Glen Velez, Rabih Abou-Khalil, Selim Kusur & Setrak Sarkissian- Nafas
The Music Is the Magic, Abbey Lincoln- Abbey Sings Abbey
Brother Mister, Christian McBride- Kind of Brown
At the Still Point, Story- The Angel in the House
Pipe Down, Bill Frisell- Nashville
Little Green, Joni Mitchell- Blue
Stoner Hill, Brian Blade- Season Of Changes
Snow on a Flower, Nguyen Le- Walking on the Tiger’s Tail
Common Threads, Bobby McFerrin- Medicine Music
(I will post this as an IMix in Itunes as son as I work the bugs out.) The class happens every Sunday, with a new playlist, at 7:30 am at Prana Power Yoga in Cambridge.
Music in yoga classes, even though it’s become the norm and not the exception, is still a pretty combustible topic in the yoga world, and one I’m sure to return to in this blog, but in the meantime, enjoy the music!
